Keeping Austin Weird

Friday May 31, 2013 / Posted by Kate T.

In the past few months, we “Flew Like a Boss” in Newark, “Got Lucky” from LAX-LAS, and “Geeked Out” on #nerdbird with SJC-LAX.  On May 21, we continued our expansion with new nonstop service between San Francisco International Airport and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Both cities have a vibrant music scene and tech-centric business landscape so we think it’s the perfect match!

We kicked off the day with a press conference at SFO, which included CEO David Cush cutting a red ribbon to inaugurate the new route and welcome guests aboard the aircraft. With a mixture of entrepreneurs, celebrities, and teammates on our inaugural flight, we were all ready to two-step our way to Texas.

As Austin calls itself the live music capital of the world, it was only fitting that we had an in-flight concert with The Bright Light Social Hour. They jammed out from 35,000 feet, even using the overhead bins as bongos to add to the set. We captured the performance on video and live tweeted using in-flight WiFi so that fans on the ground could experience the show with us.

Nearing the end of our flight, we were ready to say goodbye to “Business in the Front” and were ready to “Party in the Back,” with Joe G. saying “#ByeToTheTie.”

Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and presented him with our “#nerdbird hearts Austin” plane.  After devouring Salt Lick BBQ and consuming a few cocktails, we headed to the heart of Austin for festivities at Cedar Street.

We were treated to a night performance by The Bright Light Social Hour and danced under the tents with celebrities like Audrina Patridge, Wilmer Valderrama, and Whitney Port.
