Sharklet Sighting at Virgin America

This month, we’re proud to welcome the newest member of our fleet and—though we take pride in all our planes—we have to admit that this is no ordinary bird. Our 53rd aircraft is the first in our fleet to be outfitted with Airbus’s new “Sharklet” technology, a feat of engineering that will make her one of the most fuel-efficient aircraft in the nation once she takes to the skies in April. For those new to the aviation game, Sharklets are wing tip devices that enhance the eco-efficiency and payload-range performance of the plane. Our fleet is already one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient in the nation with an average aircraft age of 4 years and an up to 20% higher fuel efficiency than the domestic fleet average. But when our new bird makes her debut this spring, the Sharklets are expected to reduce her emissions and improve fuel savings by another 3.5%, cutting 900 tons of CO2 emissions from our footprint every year.

Fresh from Airbus HQ in Hamburg, the 53rd bird is in our Miami facility getting tricked out with our signature cabin features like moodlighting, interactive touch screens, custom leather seats, and more. All she needs now is a name, and that’s where you come in.

We’ll let you know when our new mean, green flying machine is ready for takeoff, but in the meantime, you can still make flying a little more eco-friendly by carbon offsetting your flight via Carbonfund.org through our Red™ touch-screen seatback entertainment system.
