Virgin America & TSA Pre™ for Trusted Travelers

Virgin America is now participating in TSA Pre✓™, which allows trusted travelers to be pre-screened and breeze through expedited security lines at participating airports. Starting this week, all Virgin America guests who are enrolled in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler program and have a Known Traveler Number are eligible to participate in TSA Pre✓™. Members of Virgin America’s Elevate frequent flyer program also can save their Known Traveler Number within their Elevate account profile and eliminate the need to re-enter the number on future bookings.

What is TSA Pre™?

TSA Pre✓™ is a pre-screening process developed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that allows qualifying frequent flyers on participating airlines and members of CBP Trusted Traveler programs access to expedited screening TSA Pre✓™ lanes at participating airports. Benefits include not having to remove your shoes, light outerwear or belts, as well as being able to leave your laptop and one 3-1-1 compliant liquids bag in your carry-on baggage.

How Can I Participate?

U.S. citizens already enrolled in a CBP Trusted Traveler program, including Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI, as well as Canadian NEXUS members are automatically eligible to participate in TSA Pre✓™.

Trusted Traveler participants will need to enter their nine-digit CBP-issued PASS ID number, located in their account online or on the back of their membership card on the top left-hand corner in the “Known Traveler Number” (KTN) field when booking Virgin America flights.

Elevate members will be able to save their PASS ID number to their Elevate account profile. This allows the number to be sent automatically to TSA for all future reservations on Virgin America.

TSA Pre✓ Application Program (coming Fall 2013)
Starting later this year, the TSA will add a new process allowing more U.S. citizens to enroll in TSA Pre✓. U.S. citizens will be able to apply online and visit an enrollment site to provide identification and fingerprints. Click here  to learn more about this new initiative.

Not a Trusted Traveler?
Later this year, Virgin America will begin contacting eligible Elevate members with a personal invitation to participate in the initiative. Not an Elevate member? Click here to join Elevate now, since membership in an airline’s frequent flyer program is required to receive an opt-in invitation.

How It Works

TSA Pre✓™ allows expedited screening benefits for participating guests travelling from eligible airports by allowing them to go through security without removing the following items:

  • Shoes
  • One 3-1-1 compliant bag from carry-on luggage
  • Laptops from carry-on luggage
  • Light outwear and jackets
  • Belts

Passengers 12 years old and younger can go through the TSA Pre✓™ lanes with eligible guests.

Guests participating in this initiative give Virgin America permission to share certain information with the TSA’s Secure Flight System, including:

  • Reservation information
  • Elevate membership status and/or U.S. CBP Trusted Traveler program information.

Based on this information, TSA determines if a guest is eligible for expedited screening. If so, eligibility information will be embedded in the barcode of one’s boarding pass.  A TSA representative will scan the boarding pass at designated checkpoints, and eligible guests will be referred to dedicated lanes for screening.  TSA will always incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout the airport, and no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening.

Eligible Airports

Virgin America guests who participate in the TSA Pre✓™ initiative will have access to expedited security lanes at the following Virgin America destinations: Anchorage, Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, New York (JFK), Las Vegas, Orlando, Portland, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. (IAD).
